Islam is the fastest-growing religion, and it is the most controversial religion as well because Muslims across the world don’t let anyone change their fundamental beliefs and rulings. One of the famous controversies against Islam is; why muslim women cover their hair.

Why do Muslim Women Cover their Hair?

The ruling and obligation to cover the hair for women is found in all the sources of Islam: Quran, Sunnah, Ijma (consensus), and Qiyas. So it is necessary for a woman who claims Islam to follow the ruling regarding covering hair,

In Islam, Muslims are supposed to follow the commandments of the Quran and Sunnah to please and be thankful to the one and only God, ALLAH.

The word Muslim means one who submits his will to his only Lord, Allah, and follows his commands with love and passion.

What is Hijab?

Hijab means to cover, and hijab for women means to cover their head and body with a decent and unattractive piece of cloth in such a way it doesn’t reflect any part of the body except the face.

Verse in Quran about Hijab

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

[Surah An-Nur: 31]

This verse has a clear order to cover the head except for the mentioned people.

Punishment for Not Wearing Hijab in Quran

If a believer doesn’t follow the obligatory commandments of Islam, they shall face punishment.

Quran states:

In the very same Surah An-Nur verse 63 states:

So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet’s order, lest fitnah strikes them or a painful punishment.

In Al-Ahzaab verse 36, it states:

It is not for a believer, man or woman when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision.

What is Niqab?

The niqab is a kind of veil, but it’s different from the western veil as it’s not a transparent piece of cloth but is solid in color, which hides the face, and no one can see the face behind it. Niqab also means covering the entire body. It’s not related to the face alone but the entire body, unlike the hijab.

What is Burka?

Burka is a traditional cloth similar to a cloak that Muslim women wear to go outside their homes. It covers the entire body, usually black.

Why is Burka Famous?

Burka is famous because it’s a readymade suit and easier to wear than any other piece of cloth for covering; its black color also helps a lot in covering, so it’s a wholesome package for anyone to cover themselves.

Hijab vs Burka

Many people get confused while differentiating between hijab and burka; In contrast, hijab is any decent piece of cloth covering the head and body; the burka is the word used for stitched black cloth similar to cloth.

Regarding a ruling on covering the face, scholars have a different opinions on it.
