To know that, one must understand the wisdom behind the hijab. Hijab is worn for modesty and to cover the body which doesn’t reveal the body parts to other and the color of hijab must not be attracted.

The female companions generally used to wear the piece of black cloth which is actually non attractive color.

It is mentioned in the narration:

 لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ ‏{‏ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلاَبِيبِهِنَّ ‏}‏ خَرَجَ نِسَاءُ الأَنْصَارِ كَأَنَّ عَلَى رُءُوسِهِنَّ الْغِرْبَانُ مِنَ الأَكْسِيَةِ

When the verse “That they should cast their outer garments over their persons” was revealed, the women of Ansar came out as if they had crows over their heads by wearing outer garments.
