Yazid I succeeded his father Mu'awiya in 680. His reign was marked by the tragedy of Karbala (martyrdom of al-Husayn ibn Ali, October 680), the revolt of Medina and the siege of Mecca. A highly controversial figure in Sunni tradition and abhorred by Shi'ites.
