Biography

Blind sahabi, maternal cousin of Khadija. He once came to question the Prophet ﷺ while the latter was engaged with Qurayshite notables, and the Prophet frowned — which caused the revelation of Sura Abasa (80). He became one of the Prophet's two muezzins in Medina (alternating with Bilal) and was appointed governor of Medina 13 times during expeditions. Present at al-Qadisiyya (15 AH / 636) where he carried the standard despite his blindness, and died there according to most sources.
